Stanier Black 5 Steam Train Visits Sussex This Tuesday 27/11/18
Railway Touring Company will be running their annual Christmas Sussex Belle railtour again this year, this time hauled by Stanier Class 5 number 44871 (also known as Black Fives).
The festive rail tour departs London Victoria at 1050 on Tuesday 27th November, heading to Eastbourne via Gatwick Airport and Lewes. Having arrived at Eastbourne just shy of 1pm, passengers have a 90 minute leg stretch before departing for London Victoria at 14:30. The train arrives back at London Victoria at 17:39. The return journey runs diesel hauled from Eastbourne to Hastings, where the train will reverse. The Black Five locomotive will then lead the train out towards Tonbridge and South East London, finishing at Victoria.
Alighting at Eastbourne, the Arndale shopping center is just a 2 minute walk away or for those itching for a breezy walk along the beach, an additional walking time of 10 minutes via the high street.
The LMS Class 5, 4-6-0, was introduced by William Stanier in 1934, with 842 of the locomotives being built by 1951. Of the 18 which have been preserved, 5 are mainline certified (source: Wikipedia). The train will be operated by West Coast Railway Company.
